Success at Nature Hill: Attendance
In this section of the newsletter I usually try to share an insight or two on ways we can work with you to support your child’s education. It came to my attention that we never have really discussed the importance of consistent attendance. Before reading on, please don’t think of this is as a lecture or a stern reminder of the importance of attending school. We get it, things come up that keep your child home—sometimes appointments cannot be scheduled after school or that once-in-a-lifetime family vacation cannot happen during one of our scheduled breaks. Also, PLEASE know it is okay to keep your sick child home from school!

When compiling student attendance, we define a student as being absent if they miss any part of a school day. In addition, we track how much class time a student may miss because they are tardy or in the office to meet with a counselor, Ali or myself. So far this year the attendance rate at NHI hovers around 88%. This is consistent with the past few years, but does not meet our goal of having a 90% attendance rate or higher. In addition, since the beginning of November, 13% of our students have three tardies or more, most of which are due to being late at the start of the day.

Some strategies we are implementing at NHI to improve attendance include:
  • Once a student receives a 3rd tardy in a trimester, Ali Hedrick sits down with them to discuss some strategies to manage time. These conversations have been very effective in improving tardy rates.
  • We offer on-site services for individuals who have counseling appointments with Family Services of Waukesha and the GALS Institute. Counselors have an office at NHI, and you can arrange to have your appointment conducted there. This would help cut down on class time missed due to travel and appointment availability.
  • We have arranged to open the building as early as 6:45am so that families can drop their child off early and help reduce the amount of traffic from 7:15-7:25am.
  • We are trying to offer more clubs that start as early as 6:15am as an additional way to alleviate morning traffic.
In order to help with attendance rates please consider:
  • Making appointments for your child during their lunch/recess period. While I understand that 35 minutes may not be enough, it is a good amount of time in which your child would not miss any core academic classes.
  • Take a look at the 2018-2019 school calendar as you start to make your vacation and appointment plans for next year. Take note that there is one extended weekend or break every month.
  • Check your child’s attendance on Family Access. You do not get a report when your child is tardy to class, however, you can monitor it daily. These are often great ways to start conversations about the importance of being on time to events and can help build good time management habits.

Thank you for your help and support!

Wolf Recognition Spotlight: Mr. Mike Harder
Mike Harder is a former Nature Hill student who graduated from OHS in 2015. As an adolescent he lost his hearing and he had to adjust to a new way of life. Recently, he came to talk to each grade level about that experience and discussed the importance of our Wolf Pride themes of believing that we can be successful, accepting others without judgement, owning our actions, listening, and including others. In sharing the challenges that life presented him, Mike pushed our Wolves to consider one another’s stories and to reflect on what mark they will leave on our school community. Thanks for sharing your story, Mike!

Mike’s presentation was held in conjunction with our Speech and Communication Celebration Week. Leading up to his visit, our students participated in a series of activities focused on recognizing and learning more about speech, stuttering, hearing loss and tools used to facilitate communication in our society. You can click here to access the different activities and resources shared with our students.
Thank you to Tiffany Strassburg, our Speech and Language Pathologist, for leading us through an informative and fun week of learning!

A New Face in the Front Office!
This past year, our long-time Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Deb Wittnebel, announced her retirement, which will be effective on June 29, 2018. Deb has worked at Nature Hill since it opened in 2008, and has worked in the Oconomowoc Area School District for 28 years. Please wish Deb well as she embarks on her next full-time job as a grandma, baker and traveler!

We are excited to share that Mrs. Carol Hunter will be replacing Deb as our head Administrative Assistant. Carol will be a familiar face to many of you and our students as she is our former Assistant for Athletics and current Administrative Assistant at Ixonia. We are excited to welcome Carol back to NHI! Her professional experiences within our school district and her personal experiences as a proud mom of two former Wolves will be extremely beneficial as we continue to ensure our building runs efficiently and that you are provided the top-notch customer service you deserve. Congratulations and welcome back to the Pack, Carol!

Into the Woods
Our annual all-school musical will take place in March at the OAC. You can purchase tickets by clicking here. Thank you to our PTO who has paid for buses so that our entire school can travel to see the performance at the OAC during the school day on Wednesday, March 7. Public performances will be held on:
  • Thursday, March 8 at 7:00pm
  • Friday, March 9 at 7:00pm
  • Saturday, March 10 at 1:00pm and 7:00pm

Please see the note below from Director Amy Jappinen about this year’s performance.
Nature Hill is thrilled to be heading “Into the Woods” for this year’s all-school musical.  64 performers, 41 tech crew members, 7 adults on the production staff, and countless adult/parent volunteers will proudly present all of our favorite fairy tales combined into one thrilling show to our community on March 8, 9, and 10th. In addition, the entire school and all of our district fourth graders will be seeing the show during the school day on March 7th. Thank you so much to our terrific PTO for their support and providing the transportation to the OAC.  This year’s show is being performed at the Oconomowoc Arts Center. Tickets are available through the OAC box office and are $12 for adults and $10 for students. Children 2 and under are free.

Into the Woods Jr. is a part of the Broadway Jr. collection. This collection takes well known full-length musicals and edits them so that they are friendlier for intermediate level performers and audiences. Many of the favorite songs from this classic show and movie are included.

We hope that you will join us at the OAC in March, as we are excited to be presenting this production, as well as our pre-show of Disney Music and classic characters, to our community.

Parent Satisfaction Survey

Dear NHI Families,

Please see the message sent to your email from Dr. Rindo earlier this month about the annual Parent Satisfaction Survey. We really appreciate your insight on your experiences on what is working well at NHI and your ideas on what can be improved.

Thank you!
Jason

Dear Parent,

Oconomowoc Area School District is on a continuous journey to make our schools the best places for students to learn, staff to work, and parents to send their children for a good education. In this effort, we appreciate your support. It is important to gather feedback from you to celebrate successes and identify areas for growth. Please take a few minutes and complete this Parent Satisfaction Survey to help provide this feedback.

This year we have updated our survey in 2 ways. To be most inclusive of our diverse community, we are offering the survey in English and Spanish; directions for accessing the Spanish version are available at the link below. We have also added specific questions related to transportation and nutrition services for families who utilize these services.

The survey can be accessed online at: OASD Parent Satisfaction Survey between now and February 2nd (https://huron.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5vRsVeTuPMcOPAN).

Once the survey is complete, the results will be analyzed by an outside organization. The data from the survey will be sent to each school and the Superintendent. Then, the results of the survey will be shared with parents and the community.

Thank you for interest in and support of your child’s education with us. Please contact your child’s principal if you have any questions concerning the survey.

Sincerely,

Roger Rindo, Superintendent

January Community Update

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

Dear Nature Hill Community,

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season and winter break! In a few weeks we will celebrate the halfway point of the school year—can you believe it? Though many of us are quick to make new goals and resolutions this time of year, I would encourage you to take some time to talk with your child and reflect on the goals they set for the year back in August.

While January is a slower month compared to others, this month’s community update will highlight some important topics, including:
  • Success at Nature Hill: Coping Skills for Self-Regulation
  • Wolf Recognition Spotlight
  • Winter Parent-Teacher Conferences
  • Join the Pack: Clubs and Activities at Nature Hill
  • PTO Reminders and Updates
  • Winter MAP Testing Reminder

Success at Nature Hill: Coping Skills for Self-Regulation
We all deal with stress in different ways and our kids are no exception. The increased academic demands that come with getting older can begin to stress out some students and the constant barrage of videos and photos from peers on social media create a constant desire for approval and acceptance. On top of that, our students all deal with a variety of other struggles that may affect their emotional development. Sometimes these outside barriers can become overwhelming for our students and make school the last thing on their mind. At Nature Hill, we have been discussing ways to help students self-regulate so they can successful in the classroom.

Recently, we have been trying our best to give students the opportunity to self-regulate throughout the day by teaching them ways to cope with the stresses they encounter. You can click here for tools and resources that may help your child when they experience moments of dysregulation in high-stress situations. These include:
  • Breathing exercises
  • Ways to appropriately use fidgets
  •  Calming strategies
  •  Mindfulness activities
  •  Movement breaks

Wolf Recognition Spotlight: Oconomowoc Transport
This month I would like to recognize all of the bus drivers, maintenance crew and managers at Oconomowoc Transport. They have a pretty thankless job, yet they are vital to the success of our students, and I personally take everything they do for granted. This ranges from transporting our students safely in all different types of weather, monitoring and addressing behaviors on the bus, driving our athletes to all of their competitions, and bringing our students on all of our fun field trips. Ali and I appreciate their partnership and their willingness to accommodate our needs. Not a single day goes by that we are not collaborating with them to ensure your child’s safe transit to and from Nature Hill, so please take a minute to thank the folks at Oconomowoc Transport!

Winter Parent-Teacher Conferences
As I mentioned in the introduction, this is a great time of year to reflect on the goals that our students set back at the beginning of the year. To help facilitate this conversation, we will offer one more round of parent-teacher conferences at the following dates and times:
  •  Thursday, February 1 (3:15-7:30pm)
  •  Thursday, February 8 (3:15-7:30pm)

Teachers will be reaching out with specific sign-up details in the coming weeks.

Join the Pack!
We had a successful winter club sign-up! From time to time we will find funding and interest for additional clubs. Please continue to check the daily announcements for these opportunities.

It is also important to check the announcements in order to stay up to date on club meeting dates and times. The calendar provides a great overview of all of the different meetings, and it’s the best way to be notified of any schedule changes or cancellations.

PTO News
The PTO will meet on Monday, January 8 at 6:30pm in room 152A at Nature Hill. We would love your help as we make plans for our spring fundraiser and teacher appreciation week.

Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing
Our winter MAP testing will be administered in the coming weeks. These tests are used to help teachers analyze your student’s academic progress this year, identify topics to reteach, and make appropriate class placements for the 2018-2019 school year.

Scheduling for 2018-2019
The course request process for next school year begins on January 22. Please watch your email for details during the week of January 15.

Winter Dance: Friday, February 2
The winter dance will be on Friday, February 2 from 6:30-9:00pm. Tickets will be available online and at the door. This dance is sponsored by the NHI staff, and proceeds from the dance will be used to fund the Karen Small Legacy Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a former NHI student who is a graduating senior from OHS and seeking a career in the science or healthcare-related fields. So drop your kids off for some sugar and fun and head out with your friends to enjoy a few hours of freedom!

Consider Supporting a Student in Need

January 2, 2018

Dear Nature Hill Parents,

As many of you know, Nathaniel Froemming, a 6th grader at Nature Hill, was seriously injured in a car accident over Winter Break. Thank you to everyone who has inquired about how they can help support Nathaniel. The following are a few ways to help the family during this difficult time.

  • Cards and Well Wishes:  Can be left at the NHI front desk with Nathaniel’s name on them.
  • NHI Pajama/Hat Day on Friday, January 5: Students in Nathaniel’s homeroom have organized a school wide fundraiser. Students will be allowed to wear school-appropriate hats and pajamas for a minimum donation of $1.00. The cash will be given directly to the family for any immediate needs.
  • Go Fund Me Fundraiser:  Funds raised will go to the family to help with medical bills and to help purchase a prosthetic arm for Nathaniel. The family has also been providing updates on Nathaniel on this page:  https://www.gofundme.com/wjbpt5-helping-nathaniel
  • Meals for the Family:  A meal train has been set up to help alleviate the stress of meal planning for the family as they focus on Nathaniel. Open dates and specific needs can be found at the following link:  https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/yl9ww1
  • Oconomowoc Youth Basketball Tournament (OYB):  All funds raised from concessions during the OYB tournament on January 6 at Oconomowoc High School will go toward helping Nathaniel. During the tournament #helpnathaniel bracelets will be sold and all collections will be given to the family. Bracelets will be on sale at the NHI front desk beginning next week.

I am proud to be part of such a caring and generous community. We are constantly teaching our students the importance of empathy and the value of supporting those in need. Nathaniel and his family are part of our Pack, and they need our help. Let’s come together and show them that the Nature Hill community is here to support them during this difficult time.

Wolf Pride!
